Battle-axe, rear strata, house behind house… whatever you call it, these home designs are becoming more popular in Perth. This is because zoning laws are allowing more big blocks to be subdivided to fit a brand new home at the back.
Battle-axe blocks are found predominantly in Perth’s infill suburbs like Morley, Greenwood, Beckenham and Hilton. It gets its funny name because the block looks like a battle-axe- the long driveway resembles an axe handle and the house built at the rear is shaped like the blade.

We love the design of this rear block. The Alfresco is located at the front of the home- near the front door- which provides more space for outdoor entertaining. It’s overlooked from the open plan living area which makes a great impression for guests! But it’s also the colour scheme that we adore. The neutral cabinetry complements the hybrid planks, making the space look bigger.
As battle-axe blocks are often found in established suburbs, you are closer to the city and established amenities. The cost of the land can also be cheaper than buying a traditional block.
It is common that many battle-axe blocks need planning approval if the home design differs from the zoning codes. Fortunately for you, it will be your builder’s responsibility to organise this.
