There are plenty of questions our clients ask when they build a home. But there are plenty of FAQs that people don’t want to ask out loud! If you don’t ask, how do you learn?
So we’ve written this blog post with some of the queries our clients have asked us. If there’s a question you want answered, flick us an email and we will email you back with an answer.
Do I earn enough money to buy a home?
It’s quite tough to find an answer to this question online because there are so many variables. It’s not just how much you earn, but do you have kids or any debts? How much deposit do you have and are you a first home buyer? Because of these variables, two people on the same income can have two very different borrowing capacities.
The interest rate also affects how much you can borrow. Move Homes has been able to help people earning $80,000 a year, so if you tick that box you might be able to build your own home.
Can I build my own home?
Only if you’re a registered builder. There’s a lot goes into building your home which is why we work with experienced trades and suppliers, and there are many regulations that your home must adhere to.

What can I do to save money in my home?
We know it’s easier to have everything included in your home before you move in, but sometimes our budget doesn’t allow that. So here are our tips if you need to save money.
- If an item can be installed or completed after you’ve moved in, place it down the priority list. Air-conditioning can be installed after you’ve moved in, where as increasing your garage ceiling height can’t be done.
- Your block of land will affect the cost of your home, so it’s best to stick with a flat block with no hidden surprises.
- Talk to a builder before you buy the block of land. This is because the builder may pick up those hidden surprises above or the zoning codes may restrict your home design.
- Many councils in Perth provide trees and plants at a discounted rate for local residents (and sometimes they can be free!). Reach out to your local council for more information on landscaping.
Are house and land packages on the internet real?
Yes, but often the package price isn’t entirely accurate. It’s common practice to deduct the $10,000 First Home Owners Grant, exclude or minimise the siteworks cost (you can read what siteworks are here) and use the cheapest specification. The packages on our website all include siteworks and a quality specification with full internal painting and higher ceilings. And we haven’t deducted any grants!
